Structuring Modern Infrastructure for Fast Cricket Data Streaming

Cricket fans today are accustomed to getting live score updates, ball-by-ball commentary and match analytics as soon as they happen through their mobile devices or other digital platforms. In order to create this experience for the fans, it requires more than collecting match information; it requires an extremely well-engineered, high-performance infrastructure to support what is known as "real-time streaming" of cricket data. The way to architect a modern infrastructure for fast streaming of cricket data is to build systems that scale, are reliable and are optimised for speed.

The Need for Real-Time Streaming of Cricket Data

With cricket being such a dynamic sport, there will be times when every ball thrown could potentially impact the outcome of the entire match. A wicket, boundary, or milestone achieved can quickly change the momentum of a match. It is also important to note that for digital platforms providing live updates, any delay of a few seconds from the time an event occurs until the event is sent out to users will negatively impact the user experience and diminish the platform's credibility.

Therefore, to provide real-time streaming of cricket data, modern cricket applications must use real-time data pipelines to receive, process and send match events as they happen; this way, there are no delays in the way users receive live updates of match events. In order to achieve real-time processing of data, the infrastructure supporting real-time data pipeline systems must be designed to support low-latency communications.

Minimising Latency

To provide fast streaming of cricket data requires minimising latency; this means optimising the speed at which a system responds to requests from users, reducing the time that is taken to transmit data across networks, and using efficient data formats such as lightweight JSON. In addition, using Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) and Edge Servers helps to geographically distribute the delivery of data so that users in different parts of the world can have the least amount of delay possible when accessing the information.

Designing Scalable Backend System(s)

Cricket tournaments create significant spikes in traffic when millions of users are attempting to get access to live scoring at the same time during a highly publicised sporting event. If the infrastructure supporting the delivery of that information is not designed to be scalable, then the system will either crash or operate at a significantly reduced speed.

Typical modern architecture leverages cloud-based environments that provide support for horizontal scaling. Load balancers balance the incoming requests across all of the servers in the system and prevent a server from being overloaded. Microservice architectures are also frequently used by creating a number of independent microservices to perform different functions (scoring, commentary, analytics, notification to users, etc.). This allows an organisation to have greater flexibility and makes it easier to maintain and upgrade the system.

Subsection: Traffic Surges

Since auto-scale is a vital technology for dealing with variable traffic spikes, auto-scale systems will automatically provision additional servers to handle peak demand during high-traffic events. When the demand subsides, the excess resources are deallocated, enabling cost savings.

Data Integrity & Reliability

Beyond speed, the accuracy of the data is just as important since inaccurate data negatively impacts user trust and platform image. Validation layers have been implemented at all levels within the evolving technology infrastructure to validate incoming data prior to being delivered.

In addition, redundant and/or backup servers provide continual server availability. If one server fails, another is available to immediately take its place with no disruption to the live broadcast. The use of monitoring systems allows real-time review of the health of the system, and the potential impact of performance issues on end-users can be identified quickly.

Subsection: Monitoring & Alerting

Advanced monitoring dashboard interfaces allow the technical support team to monitor the response time, load on monitored servers, and overall data flow across the entire system. Automated alerts provide instant notification to the technical support team when an anomaly is detected, allowing the technical support team to rapidly investigate and resolve any potential issues.

How to Optimise the Way Data is Delivered to End Users

The manner in which information is sent to end-users’ applications will impact data streaming performance. WebSockets and streaming APIs provide an ongoing connection for both inbound (to application from server) and outbound (from application back to server) communications with the end-user's mobile or desktop devices. The result is that instead of constantly reloading web pages for updated information, data is pushed to the user in real-time as soon as it becomes available for all intended applications.

Data caching will further enhance the end-user experience by caching frequently requested data so that the web server will not have to go back into the database to retrieve that same information each time it is queried, thus allowing for improved server performance as well as shorter response times.

Conclusion

Building out the modern architecture required to deliver real-time cricket data streaming is extremely difficult, yet it is a required element of any digital sports platform. Building out low-latency data pipelines, highly scalable cloud environments, accurate and clearly defined data validation layers, and effective data delivery mechanisms are all important pieces of this architecture. A properly built architecture will allow every cricket fan to receive real-time, dependable, and seamless updates during live matches.

With the rise of digital consumption of sports content, continued investment into an established and scalable architecture for cricket data streaming will be a necessary component in the delivery of a quality consumer experience and a way for sports technology companies to maintain a competitive advantage.
